EA Sports FC 24 Announced

UPDATE: This article has been updated with details for upcoming EA Sports FC 24 video game. The information was announced a couple months after this article was published.

The details of the first game in EA’s self-owned football video game franches, EA FC, was revealed July 13th. This is the first year they have ditched “FIFA” branding, after they reportedly asked for large royalty fees. However, the game looks to be very similar to it’s predecessors, containing many of the same game modes and options.

Erling Haaland has been announced as the cover athlete for EA FC 24, which releases September 29th. He had a breakthrough season with Manchester City, winning the Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup.

While there was speculation as to whether EA would bring the game to the Switch, it seems to be as though they will. Nintendo showed off a brief trailer, and the game looks to be much improved from previous editions, where features from other consoles were lacking.

Original Article: The FIFA video game series is extremely popular for its easy to pick up controls and challenging modes. The very first game in the series, “FIFA International Soccer” was released way back in 1993!

Since then, EA (Electronic Arts) has released twenty-nine games (one every year) for several different consoles. It’s evolved from 16-bit graphics all the way to 4K resolution. And, of course, there’s been some major changes every couple of years.

EA announced that their partnership with FIFA has ended, releasing the final game last year (FIFA 23). Don’t worry, however: shortly after, they revealed “EA SPORTS FC,” dubbing it the “Future of Interactive Football.”

While no agreements have been confirmed, EA is expected to sign with the English Premier League and other major leagues. This is a huge step forward, as the possibilities for their new games are endless.

FIFA Games For Nintendo Switch

Unfortunately, there’s some bad news. If you’re a Nintendo Switch owner, FIFA games have always been… lacking, to put it nicely. The first couple paragraphs of the IGN review of “FIFA 23: Legacy Edition” explains it simply:

Yup. four years of the same exact content. And EA isn’t even hiding it at this point; they just announce that they won’t be changing anything, and then charge their hefty price tag of $40.

I’ve never owned a FIFA game before, so I bought FIFA 23 while it was on sale. Don’t get me wrong: it’s still a great game to play with friends or against CPUs. But if you’re looking for the features that you see on the PS5 and Xbox versions… it’s not there at all.

FIFA 23 (Switch) Ultimate Team

I’ve spent about 30 hours (mostly) playing FIFA Ultimate Team, the main feature in the game. While I haven’t extensively played on other consoles, I can tell that at some point, EA devs just stopped caring about the Switch versions.

Like, you can’t even find the link to buy it on the EA website:

The page on EA’s website to buy FIFA 23. Where’s the link for Nintendo Switch?!

I would say about 50% of the mechanics/features on other consoles are just missing on Nintendo Switch. If you’ve played on the Switch before, just watch any video of FIFA 23 on PS5/Xbox. Your mind will be BLOWN at the stark contrast between the platforms.

The Big WHY

The Nintendo Switch has its pros and cons, and this really factors into why FIFA 23 underperforms on it. While it is unique in having portability, it has a fraction of the battery life, graphics, and power compared to other consoles.

This is most likely the main reason why FIFA games have just never been at the same level for the Switch. However, there are plenty of people out there who blame EA for not putting enough effort. And they do have a point: the Switch has some incredible games (such as Breath of the Wild) that aren’t exactly light on the file size either.

Could EA Sports FC Come to the Switch?

The burning question: will it come to the Nintendo Switch? Honestly, it’s anyone’s guess. Here are the possibilities:

  • Yes, but it’s the same as previous years: This is the worst possibility. EA continues to sell its games on the Switch, year after year, without changing anything.
  • No: This is an interesting one; EA could just stop making identical installments for the Switch. We’re tired of it, so maybe they are, too.
  • Yes, but it’s actually a great game: Probably the most unlikely chance. If EA were to start caring about the Switch, why now?
  • No, because it’s coming to the next-gen Switch: This is the most exciting possibility. There’s been rumors of a new Switch for quite a while now (as the first-gen model is six years old), and the OLED model doesn’t count. If Nintendo were to release a new console (with much more power) in the next year or so, EA could bring EA SPORTS FC to the new console.
